Maine coastal Schooner Fanny Gorham 1880 1:96
This thread came about because I bought a conventional solid hull wood model kit.
After trying to shape the hull I realized that I wasn't liking the process at all. The hull lines were included so it occurred to me that I could maybe make a paper model type hull instead. This is as far as I have got so far. I am using 1/32 (0.8 mm) plywood for the frame. It can be cut with scissors. The top of the frames is the deck level. The top horizontal (level E) is at the water line level. The other is at level C. I have no idea if this will work. I am just making it up as I go along. The Fanny Gorham was a shallow draft trading schooner. She would carry lumber out and goods on the return. The shallow draft allowed to go into smaller harbors. She carry's a centerboard to replace a deep keel. Because of the centerboard trunk the centerboard is offset to starboard to clear the keel and the main mast is offset to port. The holes in the deck are for the masts with the main off to the left. The last two photos show the centerboard in the lowered position. |

Yes Tim she is definitely a working boat. I don't know her history.
Added some more former's around the stern where the curvature is complex. Some may be wondering if there is some paper in this paper model. This piece is a copy from the plans onto card. I used plywood because it was available. 1 mm card would have worked fine. Jim |

Thank you At6, Doug and MaltedFalcon for the kind remarks.
It is a lot of fun to essentially design a paper model. This paper model doesn't have any paper in it yet. But it will. The paper that I tried to use as an under deck support didn't have a strong enough edge so I had to use more plywood. Remembering that this is a regular wood model kit, the deck planking comes pre-scored. That goes over the deck support. It will be a paper model in "hull only" IE the rest will be wood and castings supplied in the kit. Jim |
