Query re vinyl foil "planking"

I've begun using the vinyl foil "planking" technique that Doris and Firdajan have described elsewhere on this forum. (In North America, the material is sometimes called "self-adhesive vinyl contact paper").

My question is: has anyone using this approach had problems with the vinyl "planking" strips staying stuck to the paper underlayer?

I believe Firdajan did something with a hair dryer in this regard but he didn't give details. In my case, the strips seem rather easy to peel off-- although they're not detaching by themselves, so it may not in fact be a major problem. Still, I'd welcome any input from others' experience with the technique.

Note: I did paint the underlayer black as per Doris's method in her thread on the Royal Caroline, so the strips are actually laid on an acrylic-painted backing.

Thanks!
