Fine work. I enjoy seeing the way you are using the drawings; in a sense, building the plans into the model.
Kearsarge reminds me a bit of the Baltic coasters (Maritime Commission type N3) some of which were engines aft, like Kearsarge, others were three-islanders. Although they were built many years after Kearsarge, they share some characteristics, and I think the design had some Great Lakes heritage. I came across these attractive little cargo ships when researching my book on U.S. Army amphibious operations in the Korean War. Several of the Baltic coasters were loaned to the Republic of Korea merchant marine in 1951. Sorry for this diversion, but the images of your Kearsarge triggered some memories and led me to take another look at my research notes. Don |

Thank you, Gerd and Wiwo! Old friends meet up again!
Don, I am not familiar with the Baltic coasters, but there is also a very strong design link between the Baltic car (railroad) ferries and the Great Lakes car ferries. The famous Detroit marine architect Frank Kirby was one of those links. The Kearsarge is also interesting historically because she was the first steel lake steamer to use channel beam construction. Plus, she is part of my family history.

Cutting and fitting the rib sections is a slow process, so I worked on the dog house, the coal bunker, and cut out the basic rudder shape from .5mm card.

Hello Fred,
You clearly have some "inside" information about this one. At some point I hope you will tell the story about the family history. Mike Last edited by Michael Mash; 10-26-2015 at 10:41 AM. Reason: improved wording |

Hi Mike, it is a simple story, my great-grandfather was her captain for nine years, and my grandmother made many trips on her as a child. My father and grandmother paid a last visit to her in 1946 as she lay at Detroit waiting to be cut up for scrap.
