JSC USS Iowa
Sorry, no pictures yet, but thought I'd go ahead and start the thread anyway. This one was nowhere near the top of my build pile until today.
Someone inquired about built up models of the USS Iowa and USS Des Moines for display at a hobby shop in Ankeny, IA just north of Des Moines. This inquiry was made on a facebook page I have friended of a club in Des Moines. No one in the club could help, but I saw an opportunity to promote paper modeling elsewhere in Iowa and volunteered my services. I only get to Des Moines once a year as it is a 2.5 - 3 hr drive from my home. I usually go there for a model contest held by the same club mentioned above. I also found I have to stop in Pella, IA for goodies from the Jaarsma bakery and dinner in Des Moines at Zombie Burger. But I digress. I'll start the build tonight and get caught up on pictures in the next post. greg

Way to go Greg! You should compare it to the giant model of the USS Iowa that is (used to be?) in the capitol building. Having grown up in the great state of Iowa, I love the story of the USS Iowa. The tragic event toward the end of its life is horrible, but the ship played a big role in U.S. Navy activity for many years.
As a side note, I had a classmate in college that was on the USS Iowa during the tragic explosion. He said he was suppose to be in the gun turret that exploded, but got pulled away that morning by his CO. Talk about serendipity! Cant' wait to see your build! |

Zombie Burger, gotta love it just for the name.
Those two ships look like a good way to promote paper models in Iowa.

And the build has begun. You will notice that I have the laser cut set for this one as well. The best part of this set is the net used to catch the UAVs used for remote targeting. This would have had to been scratch built if I hadn't had this extra detail set.

I worked on those UAVs. I only walked around on the Iowa and Wisconsin, but deployed aboard the New Jersey and Missouri. Beautiful ships, manpower intensive, but still queens of the seas.

Tonight's progress. Great fit so far. Also a comparison shot between the Iowa and the Bismarck.
