Kitchens
Hello John (Cerberusjf).
Thanks. Your drawings, photos and analysis seem to be flawless, as usual. The function of the various pipes corresponds with my understanding of where the kitchens are located (between the funnels). The kitchens happen to be where my next effort is focused. It is possible there is also a medical station in that area as well. I am currently trying to figure out what the objects on the roof of the kitchens are. (See the area outlined in red in the overhead drawing.) I think they are skylights. I notice on your drawings they seem to be labeled "Bastingages" (If I read them correctly). What do you think those are? Mike |

Bastingages are railings or bulwarks. They also could be hatches, not skylights.

Mike,
Thank you for the explanation and the drawing. I would never have guessed that. But as a mechanical engineer, I find the drawing extremely interesting. John |

Yes, Bastingages does seem to translate to bulwarks. But I didn't think they would put bulwarks on the roof of the kitchen. It seems more likely they would be skylights. Mike |

I would have expected skylights on the kitchen (galley) roof too, these are found on Tsesarevich which is based on Jaureguiberry. But I've only seen "bastingages" to refer to hammock stores which serve as bulwarks, like the ones seen on the Russian Orel here, top-left:-

Or I should say, I've only seen bastingages referring to hammock stores on the plans from this period, but I haven't seen railings or bulwarks labelled as bastingages on plans. Hammock stores in the Russian fleet could be formed by two rows of railings and covered with canvas.
I noticed that there are more galleys (kitchens) near the aft funnel, I'm not sure where the flue went. I wonder if it fed into the flue that ran outside the funnel? Seems to be the obvious choice, I can't see sign of a flue anywhere else.. |

Here's a photo from WW1 and I think it shows a hammock store with a canvas cover running transversely behind the first funnel. Also a chef in the photo..

Thanks John.
They certainly did store an awful lot of hammocks! |

looks like these galleys' flues crossed above the spar deck to the vertical pipes, if only I looked before.. but whether it's worth including is another matter
