This look interesting. Do you have the entire drawing that this was taken from? Mike |

29 – Auxiliary Boats
Thanks Shipbuild and Don for the encouragement.
Thanks John and Renaud for the detailed photos. They were very helpful. I abandoned the “planking” experiments, and moved forward with “one-piece” hulls. All the parts are paper, except for the frame, which is made of 1/32” plywood. The hull and frame design was borrowed from Golden Bear’s Iéna. It was then resized and modified to replicate the drawings I have of Jauréguiberry’s boats. The Boilers and Funnels were designed by me according to the photos. Finally I added propellers to finish the work. Image 268 contains an inset (upper right) to provide a closer view of one of the tiny props. Image 271 is a beautiful historical image that shows the crew and one of the Auxiliary Steamers aboard the battleship Iena. I love the gleaming funnel. Image 272 was sent to me by Renaud. This is one of the most detailed images I have seen of auxiliary boats. Notice the variety of funnels used by the steamers. Regards, Mike |

This set of little boats really are an improvement. I love those shiny little stacks. The 1/32" ply is a nifty idea and one I'll certainly borrow!

30 – Auxiliary Boats
Thanks Christian.
After many weeks, I was finally able to install some work on the ship itself. That is where the feeling of progress is always the most satisfying. Work on the auxiliary boats is under way. Note: The boats for this ship are very similar to those found on Masséna and Iéna . A new design was not necessary, so I am using the boats from Golden Bear’s Iéna. Those are perhaps the best designed boats I have ever worked with. They assembled very nicely when I built that ship, and they are still a pleasure to work with. Golden Bear ships are distributed by Gremir Models and may be found at GreMir Models. I attempted to make the frames (thwarts) out of card. However, I kept damaging them when I installed them into the hulls. So I am using 1/32” plywood for the frames. That makes them much sturdier. The hulls are paper. The boat cradle/transoms are doubled card stock. As seen in image 276, I used thin plastic rods as guides to help align the cradles so the boats will line up properly and straight. Finally it is time to introduce the captain and officers from later in Jauréguiberry’s carreer. Regards, Mike |
