HMS Spiraea Flower Class Corvette 1/400 Scale
While certainly not new to paper modelling, my interest has always been in aircraft with the occasional wheeled and tracked land vehicle thrown in.
Often visit this part of the forum to admire the wonderful models and though while I never felt expert enough to give informed comment I have been inspired by them to try one of my own. This is a Gerry's Repaints version of a JSC (I think) Flower Class Corvette in 1/400 scale mounted on a seascape base from another kit that I modified on Photoshop for this purpose. Bow waves are bits of formed ends from a cotton tip which don't look too bad. Crew figures (rescaled from original 1/250) are available as a free download from the excellent Paper Shipwright site. Rigging/cable stays are cut to length 32 swg heat element wire (I use it for rigging on my biplane models) and is cheaply available from Ebay. It's easy to work with and actually responds well to PVA glue. 32 swg is the thinnest I have on hand though I think here is still a bit overscale. Like I said, planes are my thing and am happy to be educated on things nautical so please feel free to point out any inaccuracies or mistakes.

Nice model and well built. Rata, I believe that your model is by a German modeler and model designer called Oliver Bizer. Goes by nick 'Olli' in the forums. Other corvette models exist too, at least by HMV and Modelik, but those are much more detailed and also in bigger scale.

Yes. That started out as Ollies corvette. Very ship shape as your model, Garry.

Thanks Don. I used to build the occasional warship back in my plastic days and always wanted to own (but was too miserly to hand over the asking price! ) the Matchbox 1/72 Flower Class corvette. I think Revell has the moulds now.
I did enjoy this build and will definitely doing more in between aircraft builds. The Japanese site 'Paper Model Studio' has a terrific looking 1/200 I-400 submarine that I'd like to tackle next. It's a full hull model that I've converted to waterline and rescaled to 1/400 which will the scale for all my future watercraft builds. Here's the link for the site for anyone that's not already aware of it: ペーパークラフトの『紙模型工房』 - 日本海軍 特型潜水艦「伊400」インデックスページ

Garry,
I think you fooled us believing that you are a neophyte. I really like the inclusion of the crew. My only comment would be to have a wavier flag, and maybe smaller. Thank you for sharing. Very nice build. PS, and thank you Foute Man for your always useful relevant information. |
