From what I've read and seen of making full size wooden boats, that is a time honored method for shaping masts and yards.

thanks

i often try to imitate the original techniques

the foresail has 6 panels
my first try had to much pencil marks
i ended up making a second sail
but the first one served for trying out sewing on the bolt rope
(another way to avoid superglue, which is what i have used in the past)
i didn't use quite as many loops as the original
it takes a little while to get the knack of how to hold the rope while you thread the loop
all in all... its right up there with making treads for tanks

Never thought of making sails out of paper. Why not? Nice job on the bolt rope and cringles (or is it ear cringles? dunno, been too long.)

Hey Nick,

Maybe you need a little bit of encouragement since your last posting was almost a fortnight ago.
Last weekend the city of Alkmaar celebrated its annual historical event as the city turns back the clock to 1572, when the Spanish siege was broken. Amongst other things the pink replica from Egmond aan Zee was present in one of the canals. I decided you might want to see some pictures of the vessel for your model. Here they are:

Hello Ab:
Nice display of images. Question: What is this object in the image below?
It can't be a wooden submarine!

Well Michael, you are in for a surprise. It IS a wooden submarine. It is a replica of one of the three working submarines Cornelis Drebbel, an inventor originating from Alkmaar, built for the English king James I in 1620-1624.
