USS Catskill engine room
Here's a remarkable photo of an Ericsson monitor's engine, the USS Catskill. The picture is understandably dark and grainy, but having studied the paper engine in 3D, more sense can be made of it, and specific components identified.

Engine platform steps
Something quick and easy, for a change. No tubes! But the steps still add a lot to the scene.
I've made the ladder that goes to the left of the reversing wheel, but it will be too vulnerable to put in right now, suspended in midair, with other construction going on.

Will you perhaps make removable decks, so all this remains visible?

Yes, the raft deck comes off in one piece, like a lid, to expose the interior, at approximately the waterline. There will be the turret interior, too. But I haven't started any of that. |

This may almost be considered two separate models, one from the water line down, the second from the water line up, the latter to cover the former.

Odds and Ends
Here's the latest...
Prop, rudder and some related parts. [FRD will notice I have the rudder upside down on the shaft, and that after carefully checking first whether the more curved edge went up or down.] Other items are turret engine gears, engine room ladder, anchor and chain hoist side frames, helm platform and ladder. Time to get out and enjoy the summer while I can. Will be back in a few, and pick up where I left off then. Enjoy your summer, whatever you are up to!

I just finished reading the whole thread. I can only relate the experience as listening and watching John Ericsson and the New York ship yard working together to build the original USS Monitor! I thought that I had worked with details in years of HO railroading. I am so outclassed that it is like graduating from the 6th grade and trying to start college! Many Kudos for both the designer and the builder!

John, If this second 1/100th prototype goes into a second limited print I'll post it here, since it is such a large format print, it is not going to be easy or cheap to reproduce.
