This is the most detailed paper Monitor I think I have seen.
It certainly is a pleasure to watch the work.
Despite the difficulties you describe Michael, it seems to be going quite well.

Dear Michael:
I have a question, Did you score the line between the iron plates on the deck? in you photo it looks like you did the photo had a more 3D effect to my eyes.
Great modeling,
Miles

Michael, you may face difficulties with a lateral, side view as the model was designed to be viewed from above, the upper raft to lift off revealing the interior.

A side view will expose receiving marks for the starboard officers berths, captain's head etc.

The berth deck, ward room and forward decking is slotted to facilitate the vertical stanchions, not viewable from above but will be readily exposed by the lateral view.

Miles--
Yes, I scored all the deck plating to add a bit of realism.
I used the tracing wheel for the long lines, and the dental tool for the short ones, since it gives better control on starting and stopping.

Thanks for the pointing out some of the issues involving a side view. Right, I'm not sure it will be worthwhile. I can't really visualize what I'm up against yet. Seems like I will only be able to see inside a few storerooms, the coal bunker, etc. I will work on the port side first, to see what's what. At this point, all that's been lost is a few tabs.

Great idea, do the port side first, (I never would have thought of that), you may note Illustration number 8, it shows the port side in an exploded view but shows the same parts starboard in their final place.

You may need a magnifying glass to discern it all but it's all there in the illustration.

However you choose to do it I'm sure that it will come out well.

FRD--

Great to hear you have that book of plans. I, too have a copy of Capt. Ernest W. Peterkin's rare 1985 book, "Drawings of the U.S.S. Monitor." I have some snail-mail, hand-typed personal correspondence from him, promising to send me his book when it came out, which he did.
Since the 1960s I have been fascinated with the Monitor, especially wanting to know how it was constructed and would have looked inside in 3D. Studying the drawings is one thing, but getting a 3D understanding of the plans is something else. I always wanted to make a model, but it seemed too overwhelming. That is why finding your model was such a dream come true.

By the way, PBS has a really neat site where you can get a virtual tour of the inside of the Monitor in 360-degree panoramas from a computer model c.1995. You need Quick Time.

So sorry to hear you no longer have your other files to work from on the 1/72!

Thanks for the great tips on working with cylinders! I will get the anchor well right on your delux model.

That's the book I have! I didn't have it back in 2008 it contains a lot of valuable information.

It even has the rivet schedule for the anchor well cover!

1:100th is seriously out dated.

It's good to see one find a good home but I'm glad only 20 were printed, I've moved on.

I wouldn't hold out for a third version as the chances are slim to nil.

Perhaps someone more motivated could build on what I started and produce a more accurate 1:72nd.

What kind of software do people who make such models use? What did you use? Are there several options?
