1/100 USS Monitor - Page 7

I scratch-built the interior of the Cottage Industries 1/96 Monitor, using original plans from the Navy archives. Obviously my model does not have nearly the same amount of detail as the paper model.

I tried to make the paper version of the monitor with interior (was it the 1/100 scale version?) but I gave up. Couldn't deal with all the tiny paper parts without ruining them.

Nice to run into you here. I've seen/admired a couple views of your neat cutaway Monitor online. Great to see a couple more angles. I always wanted to do a model of the interior, which is why I was so excited to run across this excellent 1/100 paper model.

It's been a while since I have seen such high detail. This model is fantastic! I don't know how more needs to be done to complete her but I hope after you give a good think you will. This is show room quality to me. Very well done. Thank you for sharing this beautiful model of yours with us. wc

Working on the side hull interior plating. I've got the port side on. These two pieces each have 76 tabs that glue along the top and bottom, having to fit between pairs of bulkheads, plus 41 places to attach the diagonal bulkhead tabs. I spent two nights on the port side, and a lot of the diagonal tabs aren't glued to it yet. But it came out okay, considering how complicated a fit it is, with all the involved pieces.

Yeah Michael, the way that the interior hull plating is designed, it gives a lot of rigidity to the structure.

Some Monitor trivia I happened across while looking up some architecture and some railroad stuff: a little bit down the page is discussion of production of the iron for building Monitor.

I've got enough of the diagonal bulkhead tabs glued to the hull to lay down some wood decking. I really hate to cover up the wonderful framing detail down in the bilges! The large area of decking is the crew compartment. I also got its port wall up that creates the side storerooms.

You mention leaving out some detail, I reckon there is a fine balance between too little and too much, you have enough. Definitely getting a 'feel' for the real vessel from your model and I think you have the balance perfectly off pat. Thanks for the pics and vessel details.
