Anna Maria 1694 ( firdajan 2 ) 1:96

Dear friends,

At the end of the last year I was deciding, what a ship will be next. I put aside all my favorites ships, and try to find something, what I never built. Then I found the wreck of fluit, lying next to Dalaro - and I simply fell in love in this ship, the choose was born

Now, when I returned back to this forum, I found also, that abhove is building similar ship. If you want to learn, ask, or have any questions about merchand vessels of 17 / 18 th century, please ask him. His thread is the greatest ispiration for me.

If you wanna know closer informations about this ship, here is the page:

https://www.abc.se/~pa/uwa/annamari.htm

Simplified history:
Anna Maria was built for consortium of 15 shipowners in Swenden for trading route to Portugal and back, trading iron, copper and wooden planks from north and salt and wine from Portugal. In the winter 1708 / 1709 the ship stayed locked in ice in Dalaro. The crew was sent home except 5 sailors, who had guard the vessel. At the evening of 6 th february, after supper, the crew left the ship, and very soon she catch the fire and sunk under the ice.
Shipwreck was found and identified by amateur divers in 60ts.

Now back to the model. I found plans on russian webpages, they were created by Cor Emke, Bussum Netherland. Dimensions are in Amsterdam feets, so it was very easy to transform it to 1:96 scale. I will using all my technologies as always. So please - enjoy the building with me.

1st step, as always, transform hull lines to 3d, create holes for strenghtening and strengh the frame by wooden bars. As you can see, I had to create two ribs which arent included in plans.
Now Im gluing horizontal ribs, next photos very soon. My wish is create the hull into the end of spring. Then I will continue in the reconscruction of my house again.

Jan

Boy, have I got news for you!
Anna Maria was not a fluit, but a hag-boat. I recently heard that from the lady who did the research on the ship for years.
Is that catastrophical? No. A hag-boat was sort of a fluit, but with a wider aft upper-works. The officer's cabin, which used to be narrow on the fluit, was widened by adding a transom, on which the flat counter rested. Witsen writes that a hag-boat was partly a fluit, partly a pinas. It had a wider taffrail and was more adorned with carvings than the simple fluit.
Don't go into much depth for the carvings though. Keep remembering that these vessels were work horses. They were mistreated, fagged out and worn after a few years. So whatever you make out of it, don't let it shine like a new penny.
I wish you good luck with the build and you can be sure I will be following your progress with deep interest.

Sorry my friends for a longer pause.
At the end of the march my computer deffinitely collapsed ( and not only this, but mowing and washing machine too - all during two weeks ), and it takes me a while to buy a new one.
But I still continued with ship and made some photos from the progress.

Abhovi: thank you for interesting information, the ship really looks like you described. Im not historian, I just have ship plans and my work is based on them.
At the first picture is the ship how should look like, and I found two interesting pictures of fluits. Next pics showing frame with horizontal ribs and decks.

Then I continued with secont part of layer of the bottom part of planking using 5 mm strips of drawing paper, I glued them across the first layer , but I didnt take any photos of it, but it is the same as you can see on Santa Maria.

Third layer of planking followed and the upper part of planking. The upper part of planking I made from four parts, the curvature on the aft I had to make separately. I hope all parts are visible.
I sanded each part of planking.

The final layer of planking followed - I used 4 mm strips of 0,5 mm cartoon - you can see it on the 1 st picture. Then I sanded it, smoothly putted and sanded it again - now I have extremely solid and smooth hull.

Then I continued with gunports and inner part of planking - each side is made from three parts. Now you can see how the ship looks today. I will continue with clinker part of planking outside. New photos very soon ( I hope the new computer will work properly ).
