Hi Paperfan,
As Jakub said before, your model looks awesome too, I have the same problem with the model of TAMA, which I started more than a year ago. I started the model from scratch, until Angraf's model of TAMA came out, which I am now using in some details as a template to finish my TAMA model. Also this model shows a lot of mistakes, but by doing some research work, I could fix most problems. I would say, just don't trust the designers of these card models on their blue eyes, do some research yourself. These are the little enjoyments to get an, as much as possible, perfect model ! But keep on going, your model will look awesome in the end !! |

I have finished all of the sponsoned platforms. I really think this ship may have more edge work than the larger carriers. Clearly visible are the coloring flaws that can't be over come without either re-printing or painting. The launch went together very well and no trimming was required. On several of the platforms I had to trim the gluing surface to get them to line up with the contour of the hull sides.
I need to add the various rails and ladders then I will be ready to install the deck. Unlike the really well designed Junyo this deck will be a struggle to keep flat. Most of the bracing will need to be placed after installation which will be tricky at best. |

Sounds like some difficult work.
However the images look nice. The work around the stern with the boats and railing appears particularly sharp. Mike |

Junyo was designed by a different person who is no longer working for Answer/Angraf.
Nice to see all the platforms together. I will use your photos if I don't be able to figure out how the parts should come together. Jakub. |

Some progress, the deck is installed and I painted the darker hull sides. Surprisingly the 12.7cm AA gun went together well, but beware the guns face is way to long, I spliced after a made the gun barrel holes and overlapped the assembly. The range finders are all easily assembled and look OK.

Oh, after looking at the pics, forgot to mention I added a square brass rod under the deck to force it straight port to starboard. Not accurate but much better than the alternative.

Your model looks great. I like it!
Beware of covered 25mm AA gun. You will have to make them on your own as the parts from the kit do not fit at all. |

Thanks for the heads up, I may copy my GPM Shokaku patterns and make the shields from them. Your heads up saved me time.

Well I cheated. I sank my old (30 yrs) Yamato and took all her equipment. The shielded AA are Nichimo shields. I copied the GPM Shokaku shields and printed them out but honestly that model is old and not well desinged by current standards. Having built her all the way up to but not including the deck or any upper hull details I have decided to paint her and use Yamato parts as well.
The small funnel on the starboard stern went together very well, the curved section is too long so I shortened it by one segment. I believe this was the out gassing stack used to ventilate the hanger spaces. There is a large motor and what appears to be two fans in the structure. Unlike the US, Japanese carries did not have huge shutters on the hangers to allow for fast degassing of the hangers. Both navies suffered from poor overall hanger designs, the Japanese worse the than the US ships. Only the British had "survivable" carries but at the expense of aircraft capacity. Next, the remaining 25mm AA. Joe |
