IJNS Yamato.

Just a quick question on something that has been bugging me, the Yamato has rear mounted catapults, below these in the hull there are symmetrical openings. Does anyone know what they were for? Rather big for torpedo units and I cannot find out from web searches.

I did find a thread here for a build going back to 2011 but it seems not to have been completed, shame, it was a cracking build.

Due to the massive blast from the 18 inch guns the ships boats were stored below deck and these were the pathways used to bring them out.

The blast of the main guns was so great they had to shield all the AA until late in the war when it was apparent they need more AA. In addition the already poor 25mm mounts were even less effective when shielded. Each armor piercing shell weighed 3300 lbs, the 16 inch counter the Iowa's fired weighed 2650 lbs.
