more jiggery
pokery and more planks
some of them have to be "spliced" scotch tape turns out to be a handy builders tool with the jig set up its time to start cutting planks the patterns were usually in 2 pieces, which i joined together to cut one long plank if i were doing it now i would probably try to cut the planks more at the lengths the builders might have used at the nose, where i am going to have to bend the planks, i try building up the shape so i have something to bend around Last edited by kentyler; 07-11-2016 at 05:46 PM. |

a what a nose
filling in open spaces is always a problem with paper models
rounding that nose gave me fits corrugated cardboard turned out to just make things harder the heavier pieces of the frame were made by cutting out multiple thinner pieces and laminating them together i found this gave much more control and allowed me to "square" the edges better than trying to cut thru heavier card stock you end up with fewer pieces, but it takes so much more time to work and finish the heavy card stock its easier to do it with laminations |

a virtural milling machine
you get the same effect with the laminations
here is the keel and the stern post trying the stern post joint for size fitted to the keel trying them out on the model |

a plank here
a plank there
with the stern in place we turn to the stem the laminations make a nice color guide when shaping the bevel |

a stem
to be finished
after a careful assembly of pieces, a coat of paint you can see that sometimes i piece of card is used to finish off the end of a laminated piece |

some paint
always makes everything look great
now the transom always fun with its curves in several directions |

now we get
closer to planking
lots of try and fit, to see how the pieces fit up against the jig of the core |

and a coat of paint
is always a rewarding experience
after more trial fitting i make some card clamps to locate the keel in the center of the ship as its glued the last picture shows the scarf joint i use to join planks |

if its not one thing
its the other
the same kind of clamp for the stem then a plank down the side so that i can check that it ends on the transome where i think it should next we cut some planks and drill some holes... because of the scale i'm going to trying pinning the planks with copper "nails" |
