You did do an awfully good job on building the Monitor. Some more pictures would be nice.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I discovered paper modeling by accident several weeks ago. I was actually looking for a scale model of the Virginia and was flabbergasted at the price people wanted for a model. They were $250+!

One search led to another and I found myself on ecardmodels where I didn't just find the Virginia, but every other ship I could ever want to build. I decided to start with the Monitor and learn my lessons. Lessons I learned:

1) The top from a 2 liter is the exact size of the Monitor turret.
2) Don't superglue your fingers together trying to hold the string on the deck
3) Don't use a permanent black marker that bleeds really, really badly
4) Attach the thread before you glue the smoke stacks down. Otherwise you might pull them over. Several times.
5) Lifeboats are a huge pain to create.

Thanks for the tips on the elastic thread smithdr - I'll try that on the next build. Really nice job on your Virginia. You've inspired me to attack that one next.

Thanks for the awesome model Heinkel111! I can't wait to build all of your awesome ships!

I'm really, really impressed with the skill that you all have and I'm eager to continue to learn from each of you.

thanks again for the warm welcome!

Dear Chris:
When doing ships you can use Heavier thread on the standing rigging and light brown lighter thread on the standing rigging like on the davit ropes. As one goes in the sport of paper modeling you will learn new stuff. By the way don't stretch the elastic thread too much or it will deform the smoke stack.
Enjoy,
Miles

Miles is right about the elastic thread. I have bent many airplane antennas thinking the thread isn't too strong and stretches so why worry?

If you use it, just cut it a little bit smaller than the distance needed...so it can stretch a bit but not super tight.

Great job again.
