First build - USS Monitor
Hi all,
I just completed my first ever model, paper or otherwise. I purchased a few Heinkel models (fantastic quality on those) from ecardmodels.com and finally finished the USS Monitor. I'm a big Civil War guy, so having access to most of the iconic CSN and USN ironclads is nothing short of amazing. I've seen quite a few tips on this site, so I thought I'd join. Here's a pic of the Monitor. I messed up quite a few pieces, but learned a LOT of lessons. Next up I'm attacking the CSS Virginia. Nice to meet everyone, chris |

You're selling yourself short. Your Monitor was a huge success for a first ever model. Excellent work. Congratulations

Thank you all for the kind words. What I love most about paper is I can always print another sheet!
What do you all use for cables? I'm using black sewing thread, but it has a mind of its own. The lifeboat on the backside hangs at an angle because the thread won't hang straight. |

Great job! From one new person to another, I think that' just super nice. I too agree about the Heinkel kits. My CSS Virginia is almost done and I hope to post the finish shots later tonight.
I know I use a product called "EZ-Line" which is simply elastic thread. I use dividers to measure the distance between points, cut a piece a bit short and attach the ends with a combo of CA glue and accelerator applied with a brush. I handle the thread with some small tweezers. Sticks quickly and is automatically straight and true. I use is a lot on my airplane rigging so putting it on my first ship was easy... Keep her coming and ask questions about the Virginia! I'll ask you about the Monitor Cheers, Dan |
