1/200 USS San Francisco (CA-38)

My next project is a 3ft long USS San Francisco. I picked a beat up copy of this up from a used bookstore a number of years ago. I figure this build will take a while, so I am posting in parts. I'm a week in so far and have the hull done.

Here is a link to the gallery.

I am also doing my new fangled time lapse treatment to it as well. I have the first two parts (skeleton and hull skinning).

There are definitely some fidly bits to this. I ended up with a huge gap at the stern where the upper and lower skins should have met. I made a few slices so that the areas would wrap together.

So far it looks good from 1.5ft away, but needs some touchup for 1.5inches away.

I scratch built the cylinders that hold the props and scratched the centers of the props. For the super squinty parts I am going to fabri-cobble a bunch of those types of things from scratch to make life easier.

Glad to see this build. I love treaty cruisers, and look forward to you applying your considerable skill to building this model of a famous warship.

I'm having fun building the time-lapse videos of the phases as well. I did the same for a few other projects... and I'm getting better at it. It is the kind of youtube content I like putting on in the background while I build my own stuff.

The propulsion system is truly remarkable. If you had not said it was paper, I would have assumed that they were all metal parts.

Well, I have been fabricating scratch parts (not all paper). The shaft is brass, and the cylinders at the end of the shaft, as well as the center section of the props are light wood. The rest of it is paper though.

Time lapse

Thales

Loving the videos and the desk top waist paper bin.
Ive never done a warship in card/paper, they are so complex. Good luck with this build.

Regards

I'm having a lot of fun with the videos. I took inspiration from clickspring and then realized just how much time goes into a sizable model and how much video that would generate.

I'm thinking of putting some visual gags into the videos as well.
