More on Figures
I like figures on these small scale boats and ships. For fully dimensional figures check out Joe711's Harbour 1800s diorama. He does it for real. I love his horses. I used the Hathaway figures on the following model and like the life they provide - BUT.
The first photo is the Commodore Perry on the James River. Note the figures. The second photo is my model at about the same angle. The third photo is at an angle not favorable to the figures. Gumby anyone? I print on card and then chop out the figures using, mostly, a single edged razor blade. The edges and backs are finished with various Tombow markers. I bend legs and arms if possible to get some dimensional quality.

Hello John.
Yes i got these early models wrong. Went with the vagueness i had at the time. I may one day have to go back and correct these. However, for now they are good fodder for my knife...

Oh that converted ferry rates high on the coolness scale.
In a quick skim through this thread didn't see it mentioned, this book is worth having. Also of interest might be a 3 book series by a R. Thomas Campbell. I've only read the first, some years ago, and in looking it up now discovered there are 2 more. I liked it enough to give to my Dad, who retired from the US Navy. Don't know for certain if he has read it but it is prominent on his shelf. Series is: Gray Thunder: Exploits of the Confederate States Navy (not sure of order of following 2) Southern Thunder: Exploits of the Confederate States Navy Fire and Thunder: Exploits of the Confederate States Navy And see other titles there on Amazon. This one sounds especially relevant to this project, Iron Courage: Confederate Ironclads in the War Between the States

It wouldn't take a lot to make the Huntsville. Tuscaloosa is a different thing ! You may be interested to know that I have been approached by a publisher interested in my book on the ironclads. Can't say too much now but it looks hopeful. |

I for one would love to break into my piggy bank and buy your book John! In hard cover or digital format. It's a long time coming! I hope the publisher moves on this! Keep us informed!

Hi Corey, Progress so far is that next month they will do a dry run for format, layout and pagination. A guy is currently working up the cover for my approval. The Working title is "Ironclads and iron protected vessels of the Confederate States Navy 1861 -1865" but this is one h**** of a mouthful and we will probably have to come up with something a bit "snappier"! They also think that both a hard and card back will run, and are seeking a publisher on your side of the pond too.
