That's a fine model, indeed. I'm glad you mentioned Chapman's Navalis Mercatoria because that book and your book on Dutch merchant ships are two of the most prominent books on my ship modelling shelf. Thanks Ab.

An interesting little model.
I once corresponded with a gentleman who as a child had sailed ice boats on the frozen Hudson River in up-state New York. My understanding is that it is still a popular sport in that area. (Note that that area, indeed most of New York state, had many Dutch settlers.) Of course, the ice boats don't look anything like your early model! He had also mentioned that it is possible for the ice boats to sail faster than the wind because of the airfoil qualities of the sail. --jeff |
