True, Draco, that the London Naval Treaty was no longer in force, but Congress still kept a firm hand on the US purse strings until the country actually went to war. BTW, I'm looking forward to seeing how this project turns out. The South Dakotas have always been one of my favorites. Built a 1/700 South Dakota way back in 1980.

Interesting build Draco.

The The Vinson-Trammel Act of 1934 and the Naval Act of 1938 effectively authorised significant spending on the modernisation and expansion of the USN to bring it's size up to existing treaty limitations.
The South Dakotas were desinged to the displacement limit of 35,000 tons set by the Second London Naval Treaty of 1936. A so-called "escalator clause" in that treaty combined with the timing of their construction allowed them to be up-gunned from 14" to 16".

I've got the class's design mostly finished. It's easy to substitute the extra 5" DP turret for South Dakota's extra 20mm AA battery there, of course.

Ok, now at home, I have more time to write.
As you can see, both sides are finished, and the underwater hull is almost fully painted, remaining just the rudders and the inner shafts.
Lou, yes, the South Dakota was made as a Command Battleship, so it had some differences with the rest of the class. What do you mean with the class design?
The SD was the only of the class without some flashing camouflage, too.
The "difficult" I'm having now is.. which part shall I do first? I can do the lifeboats, the 5'' guns, the superstructure...

Ok, this site has crashed twice, I'll just upload the pictures for now. I had a size problem with the superstructure, I'll have to go to re scaling

Ok, explaining the pictures a bit.
Usually I start with the turrets and the superstructure. But this weekend I saw that I made a mistake rescaling the superstructure (that's why is a mix of black and blue on the center of the main deck)
As I didn't had a printer near that weekend, I started to place the guns nest over the deck, and the life rafts.
And... that's the reason why the deck is so crisscrossed of blue, black, and parts without paint.
Luckily this weekend I would be placing the correct superstructure, the last nests and machine gun armored walls and finishing the deck paint

And running as allways.
The picture includes the assembly of the main superstructure. It was HARD. The instructions gave me very few details, so I had to use the book "On Deck USS Alabama" and my previous model of the USS Missoury. If you want to assembly this kit, check this pictures as a guide.
I had to remake the main guns. I made a stilized guns, but checking the real ones, I saw than they (The real ones) were a hulk of massive tube, nothing delicated.
So, you can see them, now more similar to the reality and the Missoury ones.
PD: I don't know why my pictures keep appearing rotated, I assume is a compatibility problem. well, next ones I'll run them by an editor to solve this. :-(

As always, without time to explain.
Just saying that I disagree with the funnel, I'll custom make it.
