Beard - I don't think so, but I am not an expert on US Navy ships either.
Have a look here for starters..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin...transport_dock

Beard and Kevin -
Anchorage was a landing ship dock (or dock landing ship - LSD): an amphibious warfare ship with a floodable well deck that could launch amphibious craft and tractors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_landing_ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor...k_landing_ship Austin was an amphibious transport dock (LPD), which also had a floodable well deck but had a hangar for helicopters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin...transport_dock The current San Antonio class of LPDs replace the previous Anchorage class LSDs, the Austin class LPDs, as well as attack cargo ships (AKA/LKA) and landing ships, tank (LST): Access Denied Don |

First build photos. The bow needs to be shaped better than I did it. I don't see the tall part of the port side in the finished photo.

Thanks Don, I just remembered that I had a coffee cup from the ship. It was the LSD 38. We had dinner on the ship when it was at San Francisco for Fleet Week a million years ago.

She was lead ship of her class. The new Anchorage LPD-23 is a San Antonio class, the successors to Ponce and her sisters. |

My second(?) cruise, our group got caught a MASSIVE gale while heading west towards the Pillars of Hercules (Strait of Gibraltar) and we were worried we were going to lose Sumter. With fifty-plus foot high waves, that little LST would disappear into a trough for minutes on end. They should have gotten sub pay for that cruise! |
