Orc Village (or stone age settlement)

Hi guys,

I wanted to share my new design of an orc settlement. After seeing and building so many human buildings I was looking for something new and a little fantasy. Of course it is grounded in historical human buildings so you could also see it as an stone age or dino hunter village!

I have collected my thoughts on the design in this little article here on my site if you are interested in this "behind-the-scenes" thing.

So the basic shape will be looking like this. It's a hex shaped building for a change and features this dangerous looking spiked roof. Orc and dino hunters (or other barbarians) have lots of enemies, so they need defenses wherever they can work them in

Another variation of this is what I imagine the chief of the tribes hut!

I have some more variations again on my site.

In the next days I will be working on texturing these so that they come to life (so to speak)!

Chris

I was able to get a first leather texture done from scratch and did a test build with the roof. How do you like it? Am I missing something leathery?

Very happy with the progress so far and looking forward to painting the walls :-)

If you want to read more about this process, I have a little post showing the bumpy road and a couple more pics on my site.

Quite convincing. I can see a very viable layering opportunity here..

Given "dinosaurs roam at night" there would be dinosaur skin pieces that large available. Can dinosaur skin be made in to a leathery thing?
Smoke vent in roof is good idea.
Am looking forward to future pictures of these on a scenicked game table.

Maybe I should make more seams on the horizontal bands of leather. Could be right, that they are quite large. And about dino skin ... I have no idea Who do we ask? ILM? All is possible in my fantasy!

I am planning to do a little diorama once I have everything finished (large chiefs hut, shaman hut and towers/defenses). Would love to do some terrain like rocks but not sure if I can pull it off in paper ...

Here is a little preview of the more final look of the leather texture on the small huts. With lots of variations possible. There is the option of desaturated/saturated, lighter and darker, with or without dirt and some color variations. Here you see the brown and red. I will probably also do a green version (woodland orcs?)

To utilize a quote from my Grandfather;
The interior is fuller than it would be if it were less full than it is.
