HMS Campbeltown 1941

Hello all,

After several months hiatus due to several broken bones and forced inactivity, I have been messing around on the computer with drawing software (again) and had a look at some stuff in my stash.

The Campbeltown by JSC in 400th scale is one I have taken out and had a look at now and again and then put back, purely because I couldn't work out how it went together and because of the rather bright colours. Anyhoo, the assembly is rather straight forward after all and after scanning into my computer, I figured that I could make a go of it.

You get two versions, pre and post Operation Chariot. A simple one-page for each version.

The colours are for the Western Approaches scheme, but the blue is a little too harsh for my liking. Also, there was some colour attenuation in the top left corner which would lead to a colour miss-match on assembly.
My solution was to completely re-draw and re-colour by hand.

As can be see, the blue is more subdued and the re-drawing allowed me to put the Corticine anti-slip panels on the deck. It also allowed me to incorporate extra details missing from the kit, such as anchor housings, and some re-enforcement for the hull structure.

I have ordered the lazer-cut set from JSC to help with small details such as the latice mast and prop-guards

So, it's good to be back at the workbench doing what I love best.

Stay tooned chums.

Looks great Bernie. I love four pipers in all their manifestations.

I'm very sorry to hear about the broken bones and hope that you are making a fast and complete recovery.

Don

I've always understood the Town class destroyers were delivered to the British in a paintscheme applied in US ports, with US naval paint (= US naval colours). According to the literature (and what I remember from it) the ships were delivered with a stock of paint for maintanance, so they might have carried the US scheme for a while.
This might explain why the blue in the 1941 version does not resemble the pastel blue we all know as Western Approach blue.

However this picture suggests the literature is incorrect, as the caption says "HMS Castleton (ex-USS Aaron Ward, DD-132) and HMS Campbeltown (ex-USS Buchanan, DD-131) alongside in Devonport Dockyard after arriving from the USA in September 1940."

It's clearly visible the ships still carry US grey paint and large US pennant numbers

Hi folks many thanks for the input and the best wishes.

Work progresses with the main deck elements. I have concentrated on the parts that will be covered by the bridge and gun deck. Aligning the hull sides should be easier with these parts in place as they will provide reference points for fixing.

I started by cutting out and gluing the deck runners.

These were cut in sections to make the gluing easier and edge-coloured witha gold sharpie to simulate the brass fixing strips.

The bridge structure was reinforced with 0.5mm grey-board as this was going to be the main reference for attaching the hull sides.

Till next time.

for some reason the linked image is not visible in the original post, but it the link does show up when i "quote" the post. Is this a flaw, or do i need to upload the images rather than linking to them?

Your project is progressing very nicely!
Are you considering doing the modification for the Operation Chariot, the St Nazaire Raid.

Foute Man, yes, I see now. I have this photo too and clearly shows (rather worn) USN colours.

Pablo, the kit comes with the Operation Chariot conversion, but the colour is too pale. The colour depicted in the kit is Light Admiralty Grey, but for the mission, She was painted overall Mountbatten Pink. I am in the process of recolouring the originals in this colour.

Thanks for stopping by.
