That winch is a really nice piece of miniature modeling Jim. You must be blessed with good eyes and steady hands.

Thanks for the encouragement. You are so nice here is the rest of the winch story.
Pictures from April 2. The capstan in the next to last pic looks too big but it is actually too big on the ship. The last pic shows the capstan drive which is a black vertical shaft off of the winch. It can just be seen at the front of the winch. cheers Jim |

Moving on to the stbd bulwarks.
Pictures from Apr 14. Finishing the bulwark and adding the top rail and the ladder. There are heavy rods on the ship to support the fore stay attachments just at the edge of the fore deck. They are modeled in thin black wire just visible in forth pic. Also the extra drain port is added in the correct place. cheers Jim |

A little bit of activity, finishing the port bulwark.
Starting to put on the "steel" skin. The card thickness scales to .25 inch steel (6.3 mm). The 2 sheets are scale 4.5 feet wide (1.5 M). Further down they will be narrower. cheers Jim |

Nice work Jim.
Those wide hull formers are a good idea. That should give you a nice smooth hull. Mike |

Thanks Mike. The balsa is a very friendly material, easy to sand to shape.
Proceeding on the somewhat strange way the "steel" plates are fitted, overlapping but not lapstrake. See picture. This has to do with the ship being riveted I think. The overlaps are where the rivets are. I noticed just recently that the cutout for the prop is different in the present ship from the plans. Currently it is shorter. Taking the ratio of the height of the opening to the keel extension at the bottom it is 9.5 on the ship and 14.5 on the plans. Ships evolve. I imagine that the 1880 engine and prop were pulled and a better ones replaced them. The new prop was probably smaller and more efficient. cheers Jim |
