SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse - 1:250 - HMV

Next on the table is a design by the late and great Peter Brandt for HMV - the 1897 liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, the first ship of the era of four-funneled ocean liners.

I always enjoy these HMV builds - great design and fit of parts, crisply printed on perfect building paper.

So here we go with the internal frame:

Hi Marco,

best wishes for this ambitious project! KAISER WILHELM DER GROSSE was the first of four famous North German Lloyd four-funnel-fast-steamers which started from my (former) home town Bremerhaven to America, three of them winning the Blue Riband between 1897 and 1907.

Tragic fate nonetheless... It`s wreck could have been seen until the 1950ies/60ies as wikipedia says.

I am also in the possession of that great Peter Brandt construction but failed to get the details set. Meanwhile even the kit is out of print but I hope to get a second kit and the detail set sometimes.

Building reports are rare so I will definitely enjoy yours!

Are you going to use the detail set?

Best regards
Front Light

Hi Front Light, thanks! It is an amazing ship, and I'm just trying to imagine how revolutionary she must have been at the time. I bought the kit several years ago together with the photo-etched detail set, so I will be using this.

A wonderful project! A real classic of the golden age of ocean liners.

And here is the plating of the hull. The main shape is there (and I've bent the rudder straight again) - always a concern of mine when building in a humid tropical climate.
