Coastal defence ship Skjold, (MODELIK 1/200)
Hi,
Welcome in my new report. This time I'd like to show you Herluf Trolle class coastal defence ship, Skjold. Model was released in MODELIK no 20/11 and it was designed in 1/200 scale by Michał Glock. Model isn't difficult and in my opinion is great for beginners who want to start making ships. Kit consists of six A4 pages (4 thick, 2 soft). We can pick one of two versions of the ship with different color scheme and different forecastle (version from 1906 or 1914). I wanna make 1906 version. I think this color scheme is way better than the version from 1914. Besides kit, I am going to use lasercut parts, metal barrels and some photo enhanced parts as well. Everything you can see on the picture below. For now, I've done lower part of the hull's skeleton. Everything went fine. but I still need to use a little bit of sand paper. I left it to get dry over the night. Tomorrow,I am going to work with top part of the hull's skeleton. Lukas |

I really like the appearance of those early 20th century coast defense ships. Great work so far on this one.
TAs I am sure you know, the Royal Thai Navy Ratanakosindra of the 1920s was somewhat similar in appearance: https://www.the-blueprints.com/bluep...5D_%281925%29/ Don |

This kit is in my "To Do" pile so I will certainly be following your build. Also, glad to see you are using the two color vs. the grey version. Good luck.

You're going to love this model, I built it several years ago and although I never photo it here it's one of my best builds.

Hi,
Just quick update. I've done quarter-deck. Olny masts are missing. Now to make next things I have to finish the hull. But... Yes I have some problems with it. Because I have no experience with it and I relized too late what I've done wrong. I've covered it with putty and ground it. It was ok. After that I covered all with varnish. The next day i saw cracks and deformation on the lower hull. Now I am thinking what to do and how to fix it. But I have no idea. Here's the quarter-deck: And the problem that I mentioned above: I will push the work once I find the solution :( Lukas |

Ouch.
I think the idea behind coastal defense ships like these is that if they were ever attacked by proper sailors, the attackers would either die laughing or be repelled by the brutal ugliness of these ships, they have none of the gracefulness of ocean going vessels. There seems to have been an early 20th c. European competition to see which country could make the most unaesthetic ship (of course it must be remembered that the purpose of these ships was not aesthetic.) Another brutalist looking ship: Los barcos de papel: Monitor Faa di Bruno (1917) or https://sklep.gpm.pl/pub/thumbs/8dc/...-1900-1200.jpg ps. If you cannot salvage the hull by adding a layer of gesso and reshaping the hull with a rasp or files, then don't add the hull and finish your model as a water-line display on a nice base. It is like Julia Child dropping the turkey, there is no mistake if you don't tell anyone and the end result still looks good. |

I too love these little coastal defense baby battleships. Many being from Scandinavian countries. I look forward to following this build!
While I hadn't looked, the only ship of this class in paper I have known about up to this point is the Peder Skram from Paper Shipwright. Peder Skram – Paper Shipwright I've more than once thought about ordering one put also know I tend to struggle with finishing more complicated models... Once of these days maybe... |

Hi All,
And hi, Sunsetter and CaptJ. I also like seeing renderings of the strange Scandinavian coast defense ships. Attached find a line drawing of the two ships of the Norwegian Eidsvold class, a favorite of mine. And, I had hoped to see more of 7TP's thread, too. But, as his last entry in his thread is dated 10/27/17, I don't think we'll be seeing a conclusion anytime soon. Sometimes things happen and projects fall by the wayside. It's a shame we haven't seen more of 7TP's build, as he was off to a solid and colorful start. However, we will look forward to Sunsetter's efforts with his build. Best of luck. Score and fold, Thumb Dog |
