VOC tallship Duyfken

Well, after building a very large model, I am now back at something smaller.
I also said goodbye to photobucket, first used facebook, but those linked expired making the photo's disapear. So U decided to create a new account at Imgur. Hoping these pictures will stay..

A while ago I found a free papermodel of the VOC ship Duyfken.
Actually it was a childeren's papermodel, but I liked the idea to do some work on it, so here it is.

At first the model can be found here.

I retraced the model and started coloring it digitaly using photographs of the actual replica.

After having printed the model, I noticed there would be a white inside of the model visible, so I printed a 2nd model for interior texturing.

Puting the decks in will give it a more correct shape.

With regards,

Jerry

Anxious to see how this goes. I like what you did with the graphics

Thanks Vermin King, the graphics took me a while. I also didn't get them to fit entirely as they should be.

Yesterday I fitted the decks, and today I worked on some masts.
The mast will be painted and then the sails will be added.

Putting a double layer of paper, for the inner texturing, made the paper a little wavy.
Well, it'll just have to do.

I had the afternoon off, so I decided to finish my model of the Duyfken.
First I painted the masts I had made yesterday.
Then I added the sails and flags;

After that I shaped the sails and added some more details.
Since this is a simplified model, I also kept the rigging simple.
After that I build me some cannons to go on deck.
They should be lower, but this is the way the model was designed.

So far my build of the Duyfken.

I was going to suggest 'miscellaneous stuff' on the decks to disguise the waviness, but then I thought 'This is Jerry. He will do this without me mentioning it.' And lo and behold, we have cannons, etc.

For a simple model, it's looking pretty good

Thanks!, originally the deck and cannons should be lower, so the cannons could stick out though the doors, but that didn't fit the design. So I just added them on deck. There should be more, like a lifeboat, and a freshwater barrel. But I thought this was just enough.
I've added two hatches which weren't there. But I forgot the anchors.

Rebuilding the Duyfken

So after finishing the Duyfken model, I decided to show it to the Duyfken 1606 Replica team. They liked the model and after having a chat, I was allowed to put the model up as a freebee. But before doing so, I first changed the textures to give the ship a more weathered and battered appearance.

I also made some changes, I moved the gunports up, and the deck a bit down.
This was the guns I had included can fire trough the gunports instead of over the side.

I am building this model in the same size. But I have also downsized another to A5 instead of A4 size. The original model is advised to be enlarged for kids to A3 for them to color and build.

As can be seen some parts need to be added like a base, the anchors and welldeck walls.

With regards,

Jerry

The next step in building this second Duyfken model.
Today I've added the masts and extended the rigging more then I did the first build;

I'm thinking about changing the sails, have some rolled up, otherwhise the rigging will get hidden behind the sails.

Your rigging work makes the Duyfken appear more complete to me Jerry. I do like a more fully rigged ship. Good job!
