I just started reading this post. I'm impressed, you have your own laser. I assume you use it for more than just modeling.

To be clear I do not have my own laser cutter.
I live near Sacramento, California, and Sacramento has a very strong maker community. In the Sacramento area, there are several maker spaces. I am a Teaching Member of the Sacramento HackerLab. (That means I teach classes there, Linux, Raspberry Pi, etc.) There are 3 HackerLab locations, around here soon to be 4. The HackerLab has laser cutters, 3D printers, Electronics labs, Computer labs, machine shops, wood shops welding shops and many other tools. being a member means after taking the class for a particular tool (how to use it safely and properly) You can use the tool free. The coolest thing about HackerLab is not using the tools, the coolest thing is getting inspired by talking with other members and seeing what they are doing If you live near Sacramento (downtown, Rancho, Rocklin, Soon Yuba city) come check us out. http:\\www.hackerlab.org If you live anywhere else look around for a local maker space. |

At the risk of hijacking my own thread...
In the last year I made (Warning non-paper model images ahead!) my own designs. A stagecoach model for my daughter who is a US History teacher. A gasket for a VW steering box for my brother. A working model of Eli Whitney's cotton gin (also for daughter) An old time camera (for a raspberry Pi based photobooth) above daughter is getting married soon... A desktop video game (raspberry Pi based) that was for me... A x-mas puzzle for a kindergartner lots of stencils for painting (my wife is an elementary school teacher) and tons of stuff that wasn't my own designs. Apologies for the Non- PM stuff. now back to your regularly scheduled submarine.. |

One of the best self-made hijacks I've seen. You appear to be a real Rennaissance Man.

The accuracy of the laser cut formers make building a hull more like paper hanging that paper modeling LOL. I am learning so much from this model. i.e put the deck on before you put on the grey top pieces. I am just rushing through this build to check on the fit of the formers, I want to make sure they are perfect then I will come back and do the model right, applying all I've learned.

The koolik sub
I purchased the laser cut parts and the skin does not exactly fit, no problem for me as I am going to paint the sub like any other scratch built model, so if there is a gap..it is filled! cheers

The ones from Germany?
These aren't those, these are ones I traced from the Kooklik plans at this point they are fitting perfectly. I might have made the clearance where parts fit together a hair tight. but I wanted them to all be snug not loose, so I got what I wanted. |
