Uss Archerfish
Started the model in conjunction with Le Belle Poule so I now have two models in progress at the same time. I served on similar submarines when I was in the navy many years ago so this brings back many memories. Archerfish is famous for sinking the Japanese super carrier Shinano near the end of WWII.
I decided to make this a waterline model showing Archerfish plowing through rough seas. It will require some major mods to the hull frames to achieve the waterline configuration. Had to make all new slots to fit the frames to the cut down hull spine. Began by attaching the frame parts to 1mm card that I bought at Michael,s with spray adhesive. Then all parts were cut out in the new configuration. |

I (and several others, it would seem) have been looking for US Guppy upgrade US subs.
Is it tube section type construction, or lengthwise panels? Can't wait to see! |

My interest in the U.S.S. Archerfish was for a re-color for the U.S.S. Sea Tiger from Operation Petticoat (-=

USS Artcherfish
Finished making the frames. Painted structure black so I could see where the sanding sticks were contacting the frames while fairing them.
Started fitting the skins. Not happy with how the stern turned out. This will need some more work. Began fitting the decks and worked forward. |

Looks good to me. I really like the appearance of the WWII fleet subs before the post-war modifications.
Good entry for the "Something Fishy" theme for next year's International Paper Modelers' Convention. Don |

looks good so far. don't sweat the dented slightly uneven superstructure of any boat (sub). esp ww2 pig boats. due to combat and crash dives the hull superstructure looked like someone rained boulders on it. even my boat the stoney j a more or less modern boomer (at least when I sailed her) had huge pressure dents in the hull. this of course was not the case with the underlying pressure hull. as earlier you're doing a great job

Started working on conning tower. The tiny parts were very hard to form due to the type of paper used in the model package. It was a kind of photo paper with a very shiny smooth finish that did not take glue well and would not readily accept watercolor markers (Tombow and Le Plume) for edge coloring and touch-up. Was difficult to form due to stiffness.
Forward periscope housing has step rails leading up to lookout platforms. These were made from soft brass wire. Made a former for the steps by filing down an alligator clip to the right size. Attached with super glue. Starting to look better. |
