Confederate Picket Boat

Printed on 67 lb Wausau Exact Vellum Bristol, given a protective acrylic gloss coating (Krylon spray can) prior to cut-out and build. Completed model is 4.5 inches.
Several coats of Future acrylic floor wax were applied during build and on finished model.

Scratch built cradle made from paper art board.

Guessed at proper mounting for howitzer. Unlike ample Civil War Union Picket Boat coverage, researching historic information on Confederate Picket Boats rendered nothing useable from the Internet and civil war enthusiast friends.

Very interesting model. Thanks for sharing info about how you coated the boat and waxed it (a technique I have not heard of). I (a beginner) keep notes of the techniques of more accomplished modelers.

This thing reminds me of a canoe a friend of mine has. I painted it for him to make it look like birch bark and then he mounted a small cannon on the front (probably about a one inch bore). He would float down the river on the Forth of July wearing buckskins firing blanks from the cannon, lol.

No wax. Future Acrylic Floor Finish. Now known as Pledge Tile and Vinyl Floor Finish with Future Shine. Say that three times and you'll be magically transported to Kansas.

It is a thin, water clear, high gloss, acrylic varnish. In other words, clear gloss paint. Used for floors because it is removable with ammonia.

Nicely done. The boat howitzer slide base was a simplified version of the US navy ship's launch base seen in drawings. Several paintings and drawings of Confederate ironclads shows such set ups relocated on the tops of the casemates when not in use on the launches. The same barrels could also be mounted on the wheeled iron field carriage we have all seen. Again, nicely done.
