scale 1:100 dinghy !!
Hi all,
I am still working on my AZUMA model, which is progressing fine. Now I am thinking about making 5 dinghy's for the model. Does any body have an idea how to make a decent scale 1:100 dinghy with overlapping wooden strokes like the one on the picture ?? Any suggestion is welcome ! |

John: ????? But how to make the thing so that it looks like a dinghy, I probably would use balsa wood for the strokes, but I like to know what technique to get the hollow form of the dinghy !!

I was being funny, but you can but flat toothpicks instead of the round ones. Not sure what scale that would be for such a dinghy. But if you want to curve the toothpicks, a little warm water and should let you bend the wood around a form to get the desired shape. And toothpicks might be firmer than balsa to work with.

Hello JohnMGD.
The dinghy can make from coloured paper. May be my experience will be usefull for you. But I built boat body with flat skin. In your's case can make a body planks a little wider and get overlapping skin. This is link on my work: Another french longboat is in 1:96 scale.

I once made a lapstrake boat in 1/48 scale for a model railway.
Firstly I carved and sanded a softwood dinghy shape, slightly smaller than the model I wanted and covered it in clingwrap to stop glue sticking. Then I planked the outside by overlapping narrow strips of thin card starting at the keel and just gluing each plank to the previous one. The transom was a single piece cut to fit and glued to the planks, then a keel was cut and fitted. After removing the hull from the plug I glued in strips to represent the ribs, doubled up the gunwales and installed the thwarts. Finished off with knees where appropriate and brushed the whole dinghy with diluted PVA to tie it all together prior to painting. I only needed one but you can use the same plug again to make another four. Time consuming and tedious making five but not at all difficult. You'll most likely make six as by the time you have made five and become proficient you might not be happy with number one, your first attempt. Good luck. Clive.
