USS Arizona build

Hi all,

I'm new around here, so what better way to introduced myself then with my first build. Well not really my first, I've been building models of all sorts since I was a small child. Paper is relatively new to me, I've built a few aircraft, F-35, F/A-18C, the USS Enterprise from paperhobby. But, being from Arizona, and being retired navy, I've always had a soft spot for BB-39. So without further ado, here is night 1 progress on my USS Arizona. All printing complete, wife said I needed a new printer, so this was a good excuse. I printed the hull pieces on card stock, then used spray glue to glue them to poster board. Keel laid, some cross members in place. Looks like she's gonna be a little over 30 inches long when complete.

looking good so far. a suggestion is to cut some accurate 90 degree triangles or squares to " square up some of those out of straight bulkheads". skinning the hull will make the sides look good and the overall hull will not have a banana shape when looked from above.

CMDRTED, thanks for the tip, I will do that. I should have mentioned, nothing has touched glue yet, I'm doing all the cutting first on the above waterline portion, then I plan on glueing, then I'll start cutting on the below waterline spars.

I'm using a glue called ZIP DRY which is a sort of rubber cement, do you have any suggestions on glue I should use? Plain old white glue?

Thanks in advance.

Bryan

Well hello and welcome. Sounds you'll fit right into the mold here. Most, if not all have been modeling for some time, and not just paper.
Looks like your ship is coming right along. Please continue to post the build here.

Thanks Rich, I will and plan to. I'm sure this will be a pretty long build and I'm in no hurry to mess it up!

Glue recommendations--3m 77 adhesive spray--aleene's tacky glue. These work well on my builds.

shipbuild, thanks will look into those! Just check, I used SCOTCH Super 77 adhesive spray for the laminant. Wonder if it's the same as 3m 77?

I believe that Scotch brand and 3M #77 are the same thing.

I'm not a ship builder but have built a lot of Armor with similar internal formers. I'd recommend applying a drop or two of thin CA glue at the intersection of each former. Just let it wick into the joint. This will yield a very solid framework to mount the exterior skins.

I am not a ship builder, but I love ship models and naval history. I am glad to see your build of this historic warship beginning.

What is the kit you are working from? Or is this your own design?

KCStevens, thanks great tip! I'll make sure to do that.

Update number 2:

Had some time to dull my scissors this morning, so finished up the upper framework. Still have yet to glue any parts, this is all dry fitting at this point. Guess I will have to commit to glue soon, just don't want to screw it up. Back to work tomorrow so we will see how much I can complete in the evenings.
