Building fiddly AA weapons was one of the reasons I backed away from wwii warships in any medium. After the 8th bofors....

I have built many types/materials of models. By far card is my favorite medium to build with. Your work is some of the best I have seen. My hat off to you sir. The best compliment one can give, I aspire to reach this level of workmanship. I have to confess, guns/armament give me a fit. I cheated, forgive please....I ordered the main guns from Shapways in 3D print. But after your posted photos, I will try again to construct from the material in card. At present working on Torpedoe 98, sadly due to damage to kit/PE during ship, may have to start Emden.

DRG: I’m just finishing up HMV’s SMS Natter and I noticed the same gun barrel issue you hahe there. Seems the larger strakes aren’t long enough

Which strakes are those? The issue I have was that I can never seem to get a clean longitudinal join with small diameter tubes, so I try to hide them by putting them underneath or as out of sight as possible.

Just for information for anyone building this model: back in post #107 I said the “2 step deck to bridge” stairs were about 50% wider than they should be. I recently realised that:
a) Id used the wrong treads from the laser-cut sheet, and b) there should be three steps per side not two. Fair play to HMV, this was my error. It’s worth double checking tread widths - it does matter! |
