I know it is way to early to be exact but how long do you anticipate this will take you if you don't mind me asking?

Considering current four weeks of business and personal travel plans for May, June and July, My best guess is mid July. If I take it with me and work on it in the evenings while out of town, maybe mid June.

Despite the preCAD issues I think the Belleau Wood is looking good even at this early stage.

The fore mid deck assembly is completed and installed. The hawse pipes and such are installed with anchors. And the aft deck extension is complete and installed.
The fore mid deck assembly was relatively straight forward. My fat fingers did not like the small quad gun parts much. The anchors were completely painted because it was easier to do that than try to effectively edge and back side color with a marker. The aft deck extension nicely covers up the cut I had to make to get the rear hull plating to conform to the deck plate. Next up will be the bottom hull details... greg

I am really enjoying watching this build. You have convinced me that I need a copy of this ship. I have the Card, the Lex, the Saratoga and the Essex (all unbuilt); I need the Belleau Wood to round out the collection.
By the way, your in-port mooring speed, is faster than my flank speed, when it comes to model building. |

Quite a bit has occurred since my last post. Unfortunately, I have been away from the computer I use to post my updates. Also, last week I was out of town on business and did not carry the whole project with me.
Anyway, lets get back at it. First the props and prop shafts and such were installed on the bottom of the hull. The prop shafts were made from wood rod replacing the original paper parts. The propeller hubs were cut from toothpicks (again replacing the paper parts) and everything glued up and installed. Since the props were printed white, I painted them Vallejo bronze. The remaining items were colored with Tamiya Hull red which is VERY close to the printed color. Next I started installing the Port side details. I find these pieces to vary widely in fit and have found a few mistakes that have been easy to fix so far. One thing that does bother me is that the main box shaped pieces that connect between the hull and deck do not match up well with the marks on the hull sides. I have had to do a large amount of color work to get things to look half decent. While on my business trip, I did manage to construct the main parts of two of the six aircraft provided. Fit is not good at all on these. I also made up all the defensive armaments when I got back to my regular bench and proceeded from there. Enough talk, on to pictures.... greg

Looking good, Greg. The quad and rain 40s are somewhat rudimentary, but adequate, but those little Wildcats look very good. Looks like you overcame any fit problems.

The beginning of June found me traveling to Chicago for the weekend with my wife and oldest grandson to visit my brother and attend certain concert activities at soldier field. Anyway I have made more progress this week on this project.
I finished up the port side details which all fit decently and switched sides to the starboard side. This side is not cooperating quite as nicely. The fore walkway is too short for the railing provided and does not match the contour of the port side because of it. I had two choices: extend the floor or shorten the rail. I chose the later. As I moved aft, fit of the main box structures attached to the deck still presented fit problems and much coaxing, ca gluing and cussing ensued to get a decent look. I have one more main assembly to go here and hope it end better than it started. greg
