USS Belleau Wood
So Here we go....
This is a typical early 90's vintage Maly kit with bad paper, so... I photocopied everything onto Legal (US) size paper to preserve scale. Registration is off slightly but most noticeable on the aircraft. I'm not into the whole recoloring thing, so adjustments to color will be done with paint and markers only. I will be building it "OOB" or "Out of Book" as its presented but reserve the right to substitute other materials to ease assembly where it makes sense. Also, this is a hand drawn kit so fit may need adjusted accordingly. Anyway, I have started on the hull framework. So far fit is OK but there are a few anomalies on the parts because they are hand drawn. Since the hull parts were copied onto cardstock instead of thinner paper as originally supplied, I laminated three sheets of Bristol board together and then added the frame sheets for correct thickness. One sheet of former was not completely printed so I had to measure and draw in the missing lines. greg

As the kids say OMG! I am grabbing my popcorn and getting ready to see a masterpiece grow before my eyes!
Too bad about the Essex but beggars can't be choosers. ;-)

I'm glad this one made the cut. I have a 3/4 completed USS Card (CVE-11) and a second kit I hope to build some day (having learned a few things from the first try). It would be nice to have the CVL and CVE-11 side by side some day.
I will be capturing your images and narrative for future reference. Don |

Oh yeah, move that toe!
When I first saw Belleau Wood on the list I thought it was LHA-3. My ship did some ops with LHA-3 during a WestPac in 1982. When I noticed it was actually CVL-24 intstead it still was interesting considering the history of those ship types in WW2. That is why it got my vote.

In regards to scale, yes it is 1/300 scale.
I worked a fair amount on this since my last entry so to recap: As I was cutting out formers, I discovered there are two W9 bulkhead parts. Assembly of the center spine/ bulkhead sections went well. A few places I needed to cut slightly deeper notches to get appropriate fit, but nothing too drastic. When assembling the hull framework, I added the upper ends to the mid plate first. Then I added extra card to provide alignment for the middle section. Doing this reveals that the center mid plate is too short and there is a noticeable gap. I added the bottom hull framework last, aligning bulkheads with the upper ones. After everything dried over night, I sanded the bow edge to a point to aid plating alignment. Next I built up the fore and aft decks. Part 13 is a box structure on the aft deck used to support the "balcony" piece. Unfortunately it was too tall, so I surgically shortened it per the amount deemed necessary by my mark I eyeball. Bottom hull plating was next. I started at the bow and worked my way back. With exception to the center most section which I had to cut reliefs in the forward curves to fit the former profile correctly, all other hull pieces fit very well. The upper hull pieces are next with only the port side being finished at this point. They are a little tricky to align and I had to add some card reinforcement to the back sides to keep them flat between the bulkheads. greg

Smooth work on the underside of the hull, Greg!
Herky - The only aircraft carrier paper model I have ever attempted was the JSC Card, unfinished due to a wavy flight deck, but which I hope to build some day. Don |
