1/200 IJN Hiryu - Angraf
A continued break from my cruiser build after tedious construction on Hipper.
One of my favorite ships Hiryu had arrived several months prior. I started as always framing the hull. I basically converted the lower hull into a solid piece of balsa and sanded back to the formers. The hull is clean and without any real flaws. I sheathed the upper hull yesterday. There have been many complaints about Angraf in the past and I have had issues myself many times. Knowing I'll be painting the end product has alleviated most issues in the past with great results, Mogami for example is a fine model as completed. In this case, Angraf exceeded my expectations. This model is nearly flawless to this point. Even better they designed the kit to allow easy modular construction of the flight deck and hanger. I true engineering masterpiece will allow all of the underside deck framing to be performed then simply lower the entire assembly onto the hull. Today I built the entire hanger and deck, about 6 hrs of work. Next I will go back to the lower hull, add some filler and smooth out the shape. Pictures so far. |

Another truly outstanding model. Little by little, you are recreating the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1/200, and your models are hard to distinguish from the original ships.

Haven't posted in awhile so here goes.
Construction under the flight deck. The design of the kit allows lowering the entire deck assembly with all framing pre-assembled. |

Funnel assembly.
I admit I could not make the complex (really complex) paper rolls needed for these funnels so I fell back to framing them and filling with balsa and drywall spackle. I do like the results. The louver openings are 100% scratch built. Also have been installing the hanger side vent bulges and the 12.7 cm gun tubs and platforms. |
