VK ...I just had a look around Ray's Dark Spirit. The Helm is there, to the fore edge of the quarter deck, but even Ray refers to it as the ship's wheel.

It's a bit small for an ocean going craft though. It would more likely have had a large double helm like Chris has made, so that two or more men could control it in foul weather.

I have read the entire Patrick O'Brian series from which the "Master and Commander" movie comes. He gives very vivid descriptions of life in the age of sail.

So far your diorama is really developing nicely.

No wonder it took so long to become a midshipman! Didn't they start when they were like 12 years old?

Midshipman = Apprentice officer in the NAVY.

This 'ere am a Pirate thread ... Among us, NAVY is a four letter word that should not be uttered unless in disdain. Arrrr!

How do you feel about the four letter word ARMY? I'm almost afraid to ask.

Within the context of their world, the only militia a pirate would usually encounter would be Marines or a local island militia. A properly organised army would be essentially mainland based, and their two worlds unlikely to clash.

Umm? Did I manage to waffle me way out of that corner, or not?

I have an idea for a "Final Encounter" sequel. A pirate ship comes up against a Loach with a mini-gun strapped on!!

Well, when I was allowed out of the loud and sweltering engine room and onto the bridge to cross train on the helm I stood the helm watch at the ship's wheel. Almost got nose bleeds fer bein' up so high.
Three bells on the mid watch and all is well.
