That circle is probably the optional coil of rope mentioned in the post. Chris usually has layered pdfs so you can choose what the final print looks like by leaving off or including things.

you could make the masts six sided affairs with napkin paper sails. there is a type of wrinkly paper that they make the paper clothes or heavy duty wipes from for sails.

I am actually trying to find a pure paper solution. But I think I will make improved versions of my models too with adding wood and cloth.

Wood is just unprocessed paper.

Cloth is from a cotton plant which is just a little tree.

Here are a couple of pics from my first test build of the textured jolly boat. Most of the details are optional, but I think the built oars and rudder make it look really nice.









Still more to do. I want to add some minor details that I only thought of, after this test build. And then come the color versions and the weathering ... for the old boat on the pirate island!
