After a months break working on my Feudal Japan series, I am now back again to continue the pirate ships ... and am very excited!
This is a concept sketch of the next boat I have planned: the gun boat! Too small for cannons, but add a couple of swivel guns and you can turn your fishing boat into a deadly vessel for any pirate! After the 4" rowing boat and the 6" jolly boat, this ship will be apx. 8" long in scale for 28-30mm figures. Of course you will be able to scale the print to other sizes if required. Chris

A first go at the texturing. Some details missing, esp on the deck but I call it a good start
A view of the stern ... There are a couple of corrections I want to make. For example the upward bending of the planks is too strong. Also need to add some options like grates for the deck. And then I can start working on the mast/sail/ratlines sections! Chris

Length of the deck is apx 8". The full ship is a little longer due to the slanted stern and bow.
For width have a look at this pic. The bases of the minis are 1x1". For height, the lowest is apx ,5" Chris

Sorry. I meant the full size length in feet. I would guess about 50 feet, right?

I have no idea Michael. I designed all my boats in inch for gaming purposes. According to the widely used DND5e rule system 1" should represent 5feet. So that would lead to 40feet ship length. Not to far off your estimate!

I have been working on a removable sailing rig for the gun boat and finally settled on a solution that looks promising. It is easy to build and efficient to assemble and disassemble.
I slide the sails and ratlines over the mast by using "rings" which will be textured, mimicking the mast. Here are the parts disassembled. This is the pure paper solution. Of course one can pimp up the rig by adding thread and even cloth sails if you want to go that far. But I am happy to be able to provide a simple pure paper version. I have yet to add some minor details like a mast boot and make a simpler ratline for this small type of boat, but I will be able to reuse this design approach with all upcoming boats, ranging for a sloop to the big galleon. Now that I have the technical solution I can start focus on finalizing the texturing of everything! Chris

Here are a couple of WIP pics ...
I have textured the hull and added color modifiers for different regions. Here is a "blue" build. This is what the mast and ratlines look like textured. The above ratlines have been cut out detailed. You can only just cut out the outer outline, leaving you with a simpler cut and maybe even sturdier part. Others have suggested printing the ratlines on transparent but I have yet to buy some... This is what it looks like disassembled. All parts are "dual layer" (inside and outside) 160gsm paper and combined with the glue holding it together form a very sturdy model so far! Looking forward to the sails now :-) Chris
