Hi Tomek!
Very neat looking sails! At this scales there is no material in the world that would be thin enough in order not to look too thick - except a cloth made out of nano-carbon-tubes maybe?  I accepted that and have fun using an old neat shirt from the flee market for 2.- or 5.- EUR made of fine linen and enjoy sawing it in shape. All the 'needle poking in my fingers' and the threads unnecessary, because 'not to scale' but, hey! It is the building process that makes fun! I personally enjoy sawing the sails as the rainy and snowy days pass by quietly...  Here on my Elbing Cog you can see one of my sails made in 2010 (my first one with needle and thread ).I think silk is too fragile to be used well in a model, I once considered it myself (too expensive for me). But should you experiment with it, I am looking forward to hearing your opinion on it! Cheers and Ahoy! -Radek

Well done Tomek,
What huge sails compared to such a small hull. This ship must have sailed like race horse! About silk as material for sails: Forget it! It just does not work, believe me, I tried. Try to find the finest unbleached cotton or even better very fine linen. You can use silk for flags though. And sowing at this scale... Better glue the bolt ropes to it. Stitches are way out of scale, no matter how good your sowing skills are. Good luck, Ab Ps. I will be out of business for a few weeks as a result of some necessary surgery.

I don't sew sails because in my opinion, as Ab mentioned, that stitches and threads are far out of scale, as Ab mentioned. Maybe 1:48? But not 1:96 or 1:100. I think about very thin material for sails, even a little bit transparent, and cover it with acrilic paint. It could be done with "silkspan" (but as far as know, silkspan in not produced nowadays) Best Tomek PS. Ab, good luck in the hospital.

Beautiful work on the sails Tomek. I have seen a material called silkspan also used with great success for sail material.
