USS Saratoga (CV-3) - 1:200 - GPM
Hello all,
I'm still here in Ghana and building steadily, but haven't gotten around to posting updates for a while. So here comes the new project: the rather large (1.4 meters) 1:200 model of the USS Saratoga (CV-3), one of the first purpose-built US aircraft carriers (although originally laid down as a cruiser hull). A big, difficult project with lots of detail and fiddly bits. Just my thing. Stay tuned!

So let's get started with the internal framework. I am using the lasercut set.
Just to be clear - this will be large!

looking forward to this build. She however was not a purpose built carrier, her and Lexington were battle cruisers cancelled by the Washington Naval Treaty and like Akagi and Kaga converted into carriers.

That being said, her hull was later modified for improved stability - this modification will become clear during this build. This version by the way is the configuration from 1945, with camouflage colours.

Sara and Lex though converted from battle cruiser hulls were sleek and cool looking. it took a nuke to finally sink the Saratoga. will be watching this build coming to life.

Please ramble on talking about your methods and techniques! No insite is too trivial! This will really help with my LEX (prewar) build.

I also built the Lexington from GPM, essentially the same as the Sara. Mine was the "as built
in 1926" version. It is a well designed kit and it comes together well. I hope you enjoy building it as much as I did. cheers Jim |

Thanks for the interest! The contrast with the 1926 Lexington will be very interesting to see. The instruction images for this model are a bit sparse, don't know if that's the same for the Lexington.
I will be building her with 35 Grumman Hellcats on deck, so that should look good. I'm catching up a bit here - here is the flight deck. I have built the hangar to make the structure sturdier, but I will build her with a smooth, level deck.
