Looking good. Personally, I thought your first attempt looked fine. Your latest effort looks great too though. Given that there are no colour photos I think you're ok to go with the colour you think looks best, rivet counters will always complain but it's your model. Unless of course you are going for 100% historical accuracy, in which case there are plenty of people here who will gladly help you achieve it.

The snag with using real wood is the grain pattern and figure which don't scale down.
Using "bland" timbers like jelutong (lower in picture) or perhaps obechi (upper in picture) are possibilities. That's a pencil line on the jelutong.


No smart comments please about tree ring counting.

The only thing about this method is that there is still no grove while using pencil it is wood but gaps between planks are flat....
