Fine looking hull Mike
I think your scratch built quality work appears to be getting better even still after all this work you've done. Each one gets prettier. The bow decorations are fun to do and tend to draw the viewer's attention, fun stuff there.

The hull looks really beautiful, and the various aspects of the bow decoration - the original, your methodology for replicating it in miniature, and the model - are all magnificent. Don

It is truly enjoyable to watch you work. I really love these early warships and you have certainly picked an impressive one to model.

The only other comparable bow crest I have worked with was the one on the S.M.S. Beowulf. That one was a “photo etch” piece that came with the kit from HMV. In fact, it also had an ornate stern crest. The phot-etch was nice, but if one can make the piece by hand, the satisfaction is worth it. Mike |

Hi Mike,
great work with that bow decoration! With my technical possibilities, I would have done a lasercut. Cheers Wiwo |

Yes Wolfgang. There are some builders here that either own or have access to laser cutters. As those devices become smaller and more affordable, we will see them used more and more. Mike |

11 – Bow Crest & Anchor Ports
Thanks Glen, Shipbuild, Don, Missileer and Wolfgang.
Here are more images. After attaching the last armor to the port side, I went to the bow. The bow crest (8 pieces made of paper) is now attached. It has a 3 dimensional appearance to the naked eye, so I tried to capture that in the pictures. Regarding the anchor ports: Dave (airdave) saw the historic image I posted (number 062) with the heavy cast anchor ports. He took some time off of his Field Artillery Tractor project and did some artwork to replicate the anchor ports, and then sent them to me. I was thinking about several possible ways to model those. But after some testing, it was clear they did not look as nice as Dave’s rendition. So I punched holes to accommodate anchor chains and embossed them before attaching them to the hull. I think they look great. Thank You Dave. Regards, Mike |

12 – Shelter Deck
Thanks again Dave.
Leaving the bow for now, it is time to begin work on the shelter deck. I created a series of frames by laminating and doubling card stock. Connecticut was equipped with 20 three-inch rapid fire guns. Six of them are located inside the shelter deck; three on each side. There are seven parts (paper) in each gun. The final images show them installed into each side. Those sides were then installed onto the shelter deck. Everything fit fine. Regards, Mike |
