Thank you! It was about 4hrs of work and a couple coats of tung oil. I like the hand scraped finish quite a bit

Had a change of heart this week and decided to finish the lower portion of the hull.

Yuck, that won’t do. Time for some filler putty and a lot of sanding

Puttied and sanded.

Finished: The hull is sanded, primed, and 2 coats of dark anti-fouling red.

Final bit of airbrushing on the hull. I’d say it turned out well, maybe 90% what I was expecting. This was my first experience using putty over paper and sanding it smooth. Is it perfect? Nope, but it looks a heck of a lot better than it would have if I’d left it bare paper.

A trick I’d like to pass along though: use fingernail hardener on the paper before using the filler. This plasticizes the paper and will make it sand much better. The process was base paper skin, hardener, grey primer, putty, sand, primer, putty, sand, black poly acrylic primer, base anti-foul red-brown, weathering, flat coat.

Superb! Thanks for the updates and great photos. Can I ask what kind of sand paper is preferable for work like you did on the hull? I'm a woodworker/plastic modeler and use sandpaper a lot, but being new to paper modeling I can honestly say I've never sanded paper!

Thanks!

To take the filler down, I used 120 and then 220 after that. For the very complex stern area I used my rotary tool and a sanding drum.

Oh, wow! I'm surprised that such rough grits don't just rip the paper up. I suppose you just have to be careful and focus on removing the filler only, 'eh? Very interesting. Thanks!

D turret is finished.

I’ve chosen to display them trained to starboard with one barrel elevated to their maximum of 16°. Trying to add some visual interest.

Beautiful!

Incidentally, for a paper model, your original hull looked very good to me.

Today’s progress is a little less dramatic. The 15in rifle barrels are now finished and I’m on to cradles and turrets. HMV makes a fine kit but there are some minor fit issues with the turrets, so if you attempt this kit, be very careful when assembling them. The turrets have NO internal support, and I built the first one as recommended, but the next 3 will be built to my specifications!
