Cleopatra 1878

Cleopatra 1878

The Walden Model Co.

Sharing a bit of info while I build this for display at our next Ship Modelers Association (SMA) meeting next week.

Bolt assisted thread railings for Cleopatra.
Colored grid lines on paper visually squares the threading.
Spot glued at crossover points.

To sand fit the removable obelisk assembly I use a handy flat surface.

Bob - you have picked a really great little model there to make. I think it has a lot of charm and variety in it without anything being too tedious.

Nice work on the build as well.

But, Bob, most of all I am impressed by your method for making cotton rails. As a cotton railing person myself, I think this is just ingenious - I will be off to search for some right sized bolts this week!

What do you use to glue and finish your railings?

I normally run the cotton through a diluted PVA mixture on my fingers before I lay it down. This reduces any "hairiness" and helps stiffen the cotton. I then touch up joins with dilute glue again and then varnish (spray) or paint (brush) the finished rail.

I would be interested to hear how you approach it....

PS You know if you are ambitious, Walden also do the paddle tug Anglia, which was used to tow the barge. I have never seen the two modeled together.

Cleopatra build

Thank you Kevin,

Railings are COATS Upholstery 137m thread. Loctite Super Glue gel was dabbed on the cross over points and then hit with Zip Kicker. This same method was used for the thin fishing line rigging.

Brushed on black water color and when the railings dried they were fixed with rattle can Krylon acrylic gloss.

Cleopatra transported the Egypt Viceroy's gift obelisk from Alexandrea to London in 1878.

Model length closed is 5 and 3/4 inches, one inch wide, and 5 inches tall.

Thanks, Bob.

A variation on what I do, but I am keen to try your method as well.

Fine model, Bob.

It's nice to see this unique vessel being modeled again.

Very interesting design. The bottom looks like a lightsaber.
