IJN AKIZUKI 1942 1/200 Answer
Hello IJN- interested,
The AKIZUKI is my first step into IJN-modelbuilding in Card (some 30 years ago I built the 1/700 plastic range) and want to make a start. I decided to invest into the Answer kit as it is a medium challanging kit and I dolike her shape. Awaiting my kit, the LC-parts, gun barrels during the next days I do start in here with a bit of research to the prototype and some ideas for the Answer kit. My main idea is to stay with the waterline models to keep an intersting look of the real thing. The underwaterhull is only viewable when in the drydock or capsized - so I think about cutting it away. But stay with some 10 mms to give a shade of red into the greenish clear resin the model should be placed into. I also think about placing it into a harbour/resting scene die to this hatches and doors could be opened to give some more view into the hull - and adding a small chain as an anchor. Hello I did start with the LC-parts, after I got the technical booklet I decided to fill the "gaps" between the formers with balsawood. So I do get a solide hull to be cladded with paper. After I saw the scuppers I decided to think about bible/thinpaper to be hardened with superglue.
Hast anybody some experience with hardening of balsa wood and LC-cardboard by superglue and then got it similary sanded into shape? This is my idea to get a solide hull - am I in the right track? Thanks a lot. |

Sunday's workload: Doing the necessary filling between the bulkheads by cutting balsawood.
I am trying foreward to keep the hull without look like the spine of Richard III. found some years ago. So I do have to get a straight red line to controle it perfectly. I do think about a little cut into stem and sterns - so a red thread has to stay in the centerline's middle... |

The last ship I built was a 1/72 Russian river monitor, the Modelik Udarnyj, I did the same using foam board because I kept denting hull when there was just a skeleton underneath the skin. I used drywall filler to smooth it over but this made it too smooth, and the paper glue wouldn't stick to it. Next time, I'll go for a slightly coarser finish for better adhesion for the skin...

I have also used drywall filler to smooth out a hull and was afraid of the filler simply falling off. I smeared a thin layer of white glue over the whole of it. It actually made for an acceptable finish on its own but I was painting over it and not applying anymore paper. That said, paper would have stuck to that glue finish just fine.
