Ancient ships at 1/700 scale
Some weeks ago, being bored, I decided to do a drakkar at the same 1/700 scale I'm using with the rest of my fleet. As you can see, the 17.3m long of the real drakkar translated for 2.47cm, less than some battleship lifeboats!
Today I started another ancient ship, a trireme. Depending the source, the size of this ships range from 21 to 36 m, so I decided to use the 21m as my original size. It translates to 3cm long. So far, just two parts are made. I expect to finish the rest this week and, eventually, build an egiptian, roman, venetian and some another ancient ships, all of them in this thread. So, enjoy!

Finished!
It was a fast model, but very interesting. Comparing this ancient ships wih helicopters, the Drakkar was a Super Jolly, heavy, great cargo and poorly armed, and the greek bireme was a Linx, small, heavily armed and with small trop capacity. The Drakkar was designed to travel in a straight line, heavy seas but with the capacity of invert the heading, and the birreme was a flat bottom, protected seas and highly maneuverable.

Would you perhaps make these pretty little gems available to those brave enough to try their hand in building them?
Cheers! Jim |

I would like it, but there was never a computer design, just some hand draw parts. The only "parts" made at scale where the trireme ones, printed on a letter sheet of paper.
The drakkar was based in a draw of the keel (including bow and stern points) with deck and hull parts made in the moment. The trireme was based on the deck and keel parts that I printed, with cardboard parts that where sanded and painted later. The sails where made with a pencil drawn piece of paper, and the mast where stems of grass. Remember that there is NO WAY to make an accurate reproduction of ships hand made, with no measures taken, sunken two thousand years ago. It means that at least one of the hundred of ships build that long ago must have been just like mine.
