Oops...SNAFU central, here...
I figured out, after making sure everything was nicely cemented and dry, that I had the breach piece attachment flipped! The part with the aluminum tubing was supposed to be in the forward section. D'oh! I was able to cut things apart and flip it...now all is right with the world. Cheers again, Dan |

Last bit for today. I got the main gun all finished including the closure for the muzzle. It had about 11 pieces but looks super nice when done. Next hurdle is the gun enclosure. I really hope that works out.
Take a look! Dan |

Thanks, RM. This sub has real character. I also just found the YouTube video of divers on the wreckage. Super interesting.
I got the forward gun housing put on with it's complicated cuts and double curves. The design was near perfect and once the paper was pre-shaped using some spherical dapping tools the seams were easy to glue with the help of some thin paper tabs on the inside for reinforcements I added. Many test fits later, I only did a bit of trimming to make the deck under the gun fit nicely but the fit is pretty amazing to me. My only gripe is my own fault...I colored edges of the cuts with a black Sharpie and it sort of bled into the surrounding paper making things look messy. Not sure what I'll do with that. Just in case, I also coated the inside of the enclosure with 5 minute epoxy so it will be a hard shell in case I want to sand, putty and respray with a (hopefully) matching color of dark, dark grey. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased as this was I tough part of the project but what gives it most of its character too! Thanks for looking...Dan |

Last installment for tonight...getting the rest of the decking completed! Went really well except the directions have incorrect numbering in their schematics. It's easy to see what they should be, though, since the fit is so nice. There are even holes for where railings will go. My only addition was to emboss a few panel lines which makes things look neat. Next will be the rear gun which looks appropriately complicated and will be fun to make.
More tomorrow...Dan |

There's nothing wrong with using laser parts, as has already been said, it's your model, build it however you like. There's people who prefer cutting all their own formers and parts. Good on them, if they enjoy doing that, personally, I don't.
Model is looking good, an interesting subject, keep up the good work. |

Thanks, Fellows...
And Jaffro: I was just looking at your SCUD...holy cow! No wonder you tank and truck folks use laser cutting! That is SOOOOOO complicated and painful to cut all that out cleanly. I agree with you about the laser cut parts. They have been a real godsend on this model and I'll use them again! Cheers and thanks for the well wishes...Dan |

The Faber Castell Pitt pens are by far the best, and worth the cost. Almost every other brand will bleed.

Thanks, Fred. I'll check those markers out.
One thing I did figure out today was that my whole family says the camo is actually green. It looks like dark grey/black to me! But 3/3 can't be wrong! No wonder my black Sharpie looks funny. I also saw a picture of this beast completed on the WAK site and lo and behold...that sucker is definitely green! I think I'll take the opportunity to re-spray those colors and that will give me an excuse to get rid of those relief cuts on the main gun cover. But today I built the neat little rear gun. It's a model in and of itself! Lots and lots of pieces and lengths of wire too. I really like the look of it when done. Very detailed and really looks the part. It's got seats, foot rests (or maybe foot triggers?), wheels etc. Love it! One question for you nautical folks: would the barrel of this gun have a rope and plug like that seen on U-boats or was there something else the RN did? Just curious... Anyway, thanks for looking...Dan |
