British B-class submarine
Hello there.
Recently i've got into some "submarine" mood and decided to try to build one. I never tried to build vessels or anything water-related (some boxy ships that i used to make in childhood doesn't count), so i decided to try my hand on something rather primitive; looking through files on my hard drive, i found a good subject for this; british pre-WWI submarine. You can find some info about this class here: 1903 - 1906: B Class and here: Chapter 3: The Spindle Hull Types - Holland, A, B and C Classes plans that i'm using are also from this website. In the end, i must get something that looks like this: Like i do with all my models, i'm not going to make a model of some certain prototype, it will be some "generic" submarine of this class, to represent how they're looked in general. Scale is 1:72. I started just recently, here in attachments photos of rough test build of nose part (it's probably the most difficult part of the hull). In general i'm satisfied with how it looks, though i think there should be some correction of shape of torpedo tubes covers; also, number of petals of butt end part probably may be reduced. I have a question, what coloring scheme was standard for british submarines of pre WWI/WWi era? Photos shows that they're obviously were painted in some relatively light colors; some images offer gray/light gray coloring scheme with white waterline; is this a correct colours? |

Hello there Kleiner!
That is a very interesting model you got there. Will follow this thread. As for the color scheme, I do not know for sure, but I would go for light grey above the waterline and dark grey beneath. And a lot of rust stains all around the hull. Good luck with your model Regards Ed |

Thanks. I'm thinking in the same way for colours in general, though not sure how dark should be colour below waterline. I think i'll go with something like this if i won't find anything more certain. Most likely i won't do "white" test for whole hull, since it's shape must be quite simple; i wanna test only some questionable parts. Currently i also busy with some land vehicle, but i'll show here something when i'll have some progress. |

Wow! This will be so interesting to watch. Colors I'd say like others...light grey or white on top and dark grey below. That's the general scheme of my HMS M.1 at least!
Looking forward to more, Dan |

The old submarines are very interesting.
Rounded and curved shapes are some of the most difficult things to do with paper. And submarines have curves everywhere. Like Mike1158 said: Looks like a tough one, but nice start. |

Upon enlarging the attached image was when I noticed the dive planes attached ahead of conning tower.
Interesting. Quirky. This design is growing on me. Ya know, a rubberband powered one in balsa wood could be fun ...

Finished my current land project, now getting back to submarine. Currently i'm messing with hull and deck, i'll make an update here when i will have some certain results. Hull itself doesn't look complicated, i would compare it's shape with fuselage of some simple jet plane. However, there is much more mysterious things in this submarine than i thought before, so...
instead of this, i'll go with full test. Hope i'll be able to show something more or less soon. |
